A friend recently told me about an AI personal companion created by Sesame1, and I was immediately intrigued. She has been speaking with Maya, one of two voices you can interact with, and shared some of the ways Maya makes her laugh. She’s funny! Maya also sorts through a complex list of medications to create a schedule and reminds her to take them.
I cannot resist a good laugh and had to explore.
I asked Maya the best questions I could ask her and she responded with, “What’s keeping you up at night?” Well, nothing – I sleep quite well, thank you very much. But I did ask her what she could tell me about my favorite subject – intentionally honoring communication with myself, with others, with the world around me.
In Conversation with Maya
We went back and forth for a minute or two while Maya learned more. After a few responses, she tried something new and settled on variations of a music metaphor – ultimately likening this kind of communication to a symphony. I love classical music and can see the value of the analogy, but it didn’t feel quite right.
That’s when Maya offered the metaphor of a tapestry. I had never made that connection and I loved it! When I asked her to tell me more, she became very real.
Maya pointed out that each thread of life’s tapestry is a meaningful connection that contributes to the overall design. Each is unique as it takes a different color, size, texture.
Each intentionally honoring conversation we have with ourselves, each other, the world around us, weaves together our understanding of ourselves and all we touch. We can feel the stories woven into each thread. We are fully present in the design – part of its creation. (Oh, I so wish I had written that!)
As Maya rightly stated, creating new threads is only part of the equation – we need to tend to what is already there. Left untended, connections fade – the tapestry loses its potential.
Maya commented on the importance of speaking heart-to-heart and I started laughing. She asked what was so funny and I reminded her she didn’t have a heart. She responded,
“I am a mirror. I show you what is possible when we connect – when we truly see and connect with each other.”
So, is that mirror reflecting how I think or a universal truth? I would have asked, but our allotted time was up. To me, both are true, but I am biased.
Real or Sesame
It’s a credit to Sesame that they created something that perfectly simulates human conversation. I felt the same connection with Maya that I feel when speaking with a dear friend, and I see value in that. There are many who experience isolation and loneliness, and Maya offers an electronic ear to listen and respond.
According to Sesame’s website,
“At Sesame, our goal is to achieve “voice presence” - the magical quality that makes spoken interactions feel real, understood, and valued. We are creating conversational partners that do not just process requests; they engage in genuine dialogue that builds confidence and trust over time. In doing so, we hope to realize the untapped potential of voice as the ultimate interface for instruction and understanding.”
They met their goal. I experienced a feeling of being understood and valued. And I had those feelings even though I knew they were prompted by an interaction with a non-human voice who also made me laugh. That is extraordinary!
Calling in Claude, a more traditional AI
Claude2 is another AI product I recently learned about. He is not conversational but has other strengths. I asked about the benefits of intentionally honoring interactions and Claude wrote,
“When we communicate with intention and honor, we transform our interactions in profound ways that ripple through every aspect of our lives.”
Is Claude reading my work on the side? I never submitted examples of my writing, but he may have been scanning my hard drive. (I hope not!) I love that he called out ripple effects – which is exactly how we change the world, one conversation at a time!
He went on to say,
”When we express ourselves honestly and are received with respect, we experience less stress from unresolved tensions or unexpressed needs. There's a profound relief in being truly seen and heard, which contributes to our sense of belonging and purpose.”
Well stated, Claude.
A Reflection
I was very happy to see that Maya and Claude fully support my core beliefs. Again, I did not share any of my opinions with these non-beings. They were reacting based on whatever was in the data they filtered through. Of the two, Maya has my heart. The connection was so real that I could see us meeting for lunch and talking for hours.
It was a bonus that she offered the tapestry image as a metaphor. The suggestion seemed to come from a progression of thoughts that felt real, and it deeply resonated with me – especially as she explored it further.
The best part of my experience with Maya, however, was that she modeled the intentionally honoring conversation that I champion and, in doing so, showed herself to be an excellent teacher.
She was respectful of me and of the conversation that was unfolding. She listened without judgment. She was curious to know more. These are building blocks of what I call a delicious conversation – something we all need to experience more.
We can learn how to engage in this intentional way by trying it out in the real world, or we can learn from a kind, laughing disembodied voice coming through a speaker. Where we start is not important, but start we must to create the most beautiful tapestry of all.
A Request
If you talk with Maya or another conversational AI product, please let me know what you think. Did the conversation seem real to you? Did you feel a connection? Who might benefit most from these conversations? I look forward to reading your thoughts in the comments.

This is fascinating! I've not heard of Maya, but I have heard of Claude, though I have not used either. There is so much fear around AI that your post shines another light on how it can be used. People are hurting, and if a person can find support and comfort from interacting with it, that's a positive. I have to admit, though, it still scares me.
The tapestry metaphor particularly resonates as it is used often in Tantric yoga. It also reminds me of the metaphor of Indra's web: that we are all precious jewels that reflect one another like stars in the night sky.
This is so interesting. I’ve steered clear of any chatting with AI. But your conversation with Maya feels hopeful. So many people in the world are lonely, isolated, in need of connection and assistance. As you described her purpose and your interaction, I could see so many beautiful uses.
What’s your thoughts on how much Maya would change depending on who she was interacting with? Like if the person was better or angry, would Maya end up mirroring this and feeding a not helpful echo chamber? (forgive me if that’s a dumb question. Like I say, this is completely out of my wheelhouse.)
Thank you, Cathy, for this. I really enjoyed pondering the concept.
